New Center Green attractions
prove popular with the people

The latest additions to the Center for the Performing Arts campus are drawing some attention, to say the least.

In their first five days of operation, the Carmel Christkindlmarkt and The Ice at Center Green attracted more than 48,000 visitors, including some 4,000 skaters, according to Carmel city officials. The two attractions generated $410,000 in sales during the first week.

“It is heartwarming to see the number of families and friends enjoying time together this winter at the market and skating on The Ice,” Mayor Jim Brainard said in a written statement. “The memories being made will last a lifetime, and many will create traditions around this venue that they will look forward to from year to year.”

Several adjustments have been made to accommodate the masses. Skaters now have more flexibility in scheduling their rink time, and the rink capacity has been raised from 150 to 200. Signage has been added to facilitate parking and pedestrian traffic. Bottled water is now available at the Groomsville Popcorn hut.

Among the treats and gift items at the market, one particularly popular product has been the Gluhwein, a warm, mulled wine that is a standard refreshment at European winter markets and has long been popular with skiers and other outdoor enthusiasts. The Christkindlmarkt has added a second Gluhwein booth to meet the demand.

Both attractions are open Wednesdays through Sundays (times vary) – the Christkindlmarkt through Dec. 24 and The Ice through March 11. Visitors are encouraged to use the Veterans Way Parking Garage off Range Line Road.

Because of the increased traffic and parking demand, people attending events at the Palladium, the Tarkington and the Studio Theater are strongly encouraged to arrive early and allow adequate time for parking and walking to the venues. Handicapped parking spots are available on City Center Way, along the north side of the Palladium.
