The space between the Palladium and the James Building is still a construction zone, but the ice rink and market stalls will be completed in time for the opening events, city officials say.

Christkindlmarkt, ice rink to open Nov. 18

City of Carmel adds seasonal features to the Center's campus

Get ready for two new wintertime attractions on the campus of the Center for the Performing Arts.

On the Center Green, between the Palladium and the James Building (home of the Tarkington and the Studio Theater), the City of Carmel is constructing a public skating rink, The Ice at Center Green, and a traditional German-style holiday bazaar, the Carmel Christkindlmarkt. Each is expected to become an annual presence, complementing the city’s busy schedule of warm-weather events.

“I think we can safely say that winter in Carmel will never be the same,” Mayor Jim Brainard told reporters at a news conference Monday.

Both will open for the first time at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, followed by the city's Holiday at Center Green celebration at 3:30 p.m. Previously known as Holiday on the Square, the event will feature live entertainment, real reindeer, a tree lighting ceremony and a visit from Santa.

The inaugural Christkindlmarkt will comprise more than 30 vendor huts selling authentic German gift items, most of them handcrafted, as well as live entertainment and traditional German food and beverages. The market will be open Wednesdays through Sundays, with afternoon and evening hours through Dec. 24. Find more details at

The Ice at Center Green, the city’s first and only outdoor skating rink, will remain in place through March 11, thanks to a chilling system that will maintain the ice even if the weather warms up. The Ice also will be open to the public Wednesdays through Sundays and will be available for corporate rentals on Mondays and Tuesdays. Skaters will buy prescheduled blocks of time, and skate rental will be available. For specific hours, prices and other information, visit

Please note that no pets are allowed, and the rink and market will be closed on Thanksgiving, Nov. 23.

On Saturday afternoons in December, the Center Green will be a stop on the city’s Holiday Trolley route.
