The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative’s new exhibit, Roaring Hot 20’s Jazz, is now open!

Large urban jazz powerhouses of the 1920’s, including Chicago and New Orleans, were not the only cities dancing to the syncopated rhythms of “hot” jazz. Indiana musicians heard the new sound and not only played it, but influenced the music for decades to come.
This FREE Exhibit is open Monday - Friday, 10am - 4pm


The Song Is You Challenge aims to raise additional $1 million beyond generous $1 million gift from Michael Feinstein and Terrence Flannery

The Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative has received a $1 million gift from Michael Feinstein and his spouse Terrence Flannery. The gift will provide funding to support the Initiative’s mission to bring the music of the Great American Songbook to young people today, and to preserve it for future generations.

About the Initiative

Between the two World Wars, something magical happened in America.  A battery of musical geniuses on Broadway, Tin Pan Alley, and in Hollywood created some of the most popular and enduring songs the world has ever known.

These are the songs that captured the moment we fell in love, the songs that nursed our broken hearts, and the songs that underscored the happy ending.  They put voice to our spirit of optimism and our hope for the future.  They are the spring in our steps, the springtime in our hearts.  The Great American Songbook is the heartbeat of the American spirit, its pulse in thirty-two bars.

Our Mission

The two-fold mission of the Michael Feinstein Great American Songbook Initiative is to bring the music of the Great American Songbook to young people today and to preserve it for future generations.  We do this through the following (click on pictures to learn more):
